Korto Momolu Fall 2010: Flattering + Functional

With swaddling crochet knits, flowing floor-length sweater dresses, high-waisted draped wide-legged pants, and sprinkles of sequins, Korto Momolu presented a closet for the diva who likes her fashion to function. The crochet knits boasted versatility styled (by Puffy's ex Misa Hylton-Brim) as scarves and hooded shrugs; the sweater dresses came with embroidered details and winter-appropriate cowl and turtlenecks; and the flowing silhouettes were largely roomy, flattering on any body type.

Less successful were the pieces that felt too specific: hot pink skinny pants for example. Momolu's fellow Project Runway alums Suede and Leanne Marshall came out to support, as well as a roster of America's Next Top Model castmates; Puffy's son Justin and his mom, Janice Combs were also front row.

About Korto Momolu

Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe – Mo • Mo • Lu) is a popular fashion designer and stylist. Korto was born in Monrovia, Liberia and lived there until 1990 with her parents and siblings. They settled in Canada where Korto pursued her passion and studied fashion design at the L’Academies des Couturiers Design Institute in Ottawa, Ontario. After graduation, she moved to Arkansas with her husband to live and raise their daughter. Influenced by her African roots and inspired by rich fabrics, Korto began producing chic women’s wear and accessories.

After working as an independent fashion designer and continuing her education at the renowned Parsons School of Design, Korto followed her dreams and won a place on the 5th season of Bravo TV’s hit show Project Runway. Throughout the show, Korto stood out as a designer who embraced color and diversity and displayed such extraordinary talent that she was awarded the fan favorite prize. During the season finale of Project Runway, Korto presented her spring 2009 collection at Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week and ultimately ended the season as 1st runner up.

After the show, November 13th was named Korto Momolu Day in Little Rock, Arkansas and Korto continued to present her collections and sell her accessories. She also began to make personal appearances and accept custom commissions from the likes of Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Her fame endured and Korto was asked to appear on Project Runway All-Stars. After her appearance, Korto partnered up with Madera Exotic Woods to design The Saba Collection- an exclusive line of fashionable eco-friendly jewelry.

Subsequently, Dillard’s Department Stores created a partnership with Korto to design an eye-catching collection of handbags and jewelry that will debut in February 2010.
